Environmental organisations in Graubünden, Switzerland have expressed harsh criticism of the Federal Council's plans to reduce the number of wolf packs in the country through a new ordinance. They argue that the proposed "extreme decimation" of a protected species violates the law and cannot be scientifically justified. They also warn that the interconnection of wolf territories and the genetic exchange between wolves throughout the Alps will no longer be guaranteed. The Federal Council's revised Hunting Law, which will come into effect in early December, aims to reduce the growing wolf population by up to 70%. The environmental organisations argue that this would lead to the practical extinction of wolves in Graubünden, exacerbating the problem of overpopulation of deer and deer. They also point out that wolves help to reduce the damage caused by overgrazing of young trees in protective forests, and that their decimation would lead to increased costs for the protection of these forests. The organisations suggest that well-protected alpine areas should be preserved, while those that are not easily protected should be abandoned.
