After the high-profile Ukraine peace conference at Bürgenstock NW, it becomes known: According to the federal government, several suspected cyber attacks were carried out against the security arrangements for the international summit.
Measures were taken quickly, the Federal Office for Cybersecurity (Bacs) announced in a report on Thursday. The authority did not provide any details. No further information on the attacks will be provided for the time being.
The attacks could not have jeopardized the holding of the conference due to the measures taken, it said. Over 40 heads of state and government took part in the summit on steps towards peace in the Ukraine war. Several thousand police and army personnel were deployed.
Cyber attacks on websites had already become known before the conference at the weekend. According to the federal government, the pro-Russian hacker group "Noname057(16)" carried out attacks on the websites of 22 authorities and organizations a week ago. The aim of these attacks was to paralyze the websites. The attacks led to minor disruptions to IT infrastructures, including at customs.
Before the conference, there was a suspected cyberattack against employees of the Canton of Lucerne's emergency medical call center. Unknown persons attempted to obtain access data using forged e-mails. Employees recognized the attack and reported it to the Federal Cyber Situation Network. It was averted at an early stage.
In addition, there were attempts to break into the IT systems of Nidwalden and Obwalden by freeloaders who had nothing to do with the security conference. The perpetrators were targeting the cantons' e-mail systems. The attempted break-ins were unsuccessful.
