Data of up to one million amateur athletes hacked

Data from up to one million amateur athletes has been stolen in a cyber attack on the Swiss company Datasport. The data set contains names, telephone numbers and email addresses, among other things, and was offered for sale in a hacker forum.
Datasport announced on Thursday that security-relevant data such as passwords or payment information were not affected by the hacker attack. "Most of the information is put online by our users themselves on Datasport.com and is therefore publicly accessible," Datasport CEO Thomas Bachofner told the industry magazine "Inside It".
The criminal access had already taken place on January 22, Datasport explained. Initially, there were no indications that more than a few data records had been affected. It has now emerged that up to one million data records were stolen.
As reported by "Inside It", a data package containing around 1.3 million data records has recently been offered for sale on a hacker forum. Over 900,000 data records would concern Swiss citizens, the rest people from neighboring countries.
Datasport offers services such as timekeeping, start number processes and online registrations for mass sports events. Users can use the service to collect their performance data and publish it as required.
