The defendant in the Jestetten (D) homicide surprisingly confessed to the crime at the Waldshut district court on Tuesday. The 39-year-old man from Latvia is accused of killing a 31-year-old man from the canton of St. Gallen in June last year.
On Tuesday, the last day of the trial, the defense lawyer read out a statement from the defendant. In it, he confessed to the crime. "I regret the crime and can no longer explain it to myself today," it said. He asked his relatives for forgiveness, but could understand if they did not forgive him.
The public prosecutor is demanding a conviction for manslaughter. The defendant faces up to 15 years in prison. At the end of the trial on Tuesday, the public prosecutor and the defense attorney will make their pleas. The verdict is expected to be announced on Thursday.
