US Democratic voters living in Switzerland will vote next week on their candidate for the presidential election in November. Joe Biden is the only candidate in the race, as the only opposing candidate on the ballot dropped out of the race at the beginning of February.
Marianne Williamson, an author and politician from Texas, was the only candidate who wanted to contest the incumbent president's nomination on the ballot paper for US citizens living abroad. She officially withdrew from the race on February 7 after a disappointing result in Nevada.
Her name will still appear on the ballot papers that will be distributed on March 5 - Super Tuesday - in Geneva and on March 9 in Basel and Zurich in the voting centers run by the so-called Democrats Abroad.
According to the Federal Statistical Office, more than 20,000 US citizens live permanently in Switzerland. 768 of them took part in the Democratic primaries in 2020, according to figures from Democrats Abroad.
The Democrats Abroad nominate 17 of the 4532 delegates who will attend the US Democratic convention in Chicago in August.
However, Democrats Abroad emphasize the influence that these votes have on the outcome of the nomination. In a statement, they point out that a vote cast by US citizens abroad carries up to four times more weight than a vote registered in one of the country's states due to the smaller number of voters.
