A surgeon defended himself against being responsible for the death of a patient at the cantonal court of St. Gallen on Tuesday. In 2017, a woman died after an operation. The doctor demanded that a verdict of involuntary manslaughter be overturned.
In 2017, a 39-year-old woman went to a hospital in the canton of St. Gallen due to abdominal pain, according to the indictment from the public prosecutor's office. In the evening, the woman was operated on by the now 60-year-old surgeon for gallbladder inflammation.
The woman died the night after the operation due to blood loss in the abdominal cavity. According to the indictment, the bleeding was due to a medical error on the part of the surgeon. The surgeon had not properly closed the artery of the removed gallbladder with clips.
The surgeon defended himself in the cantonal court against the accusation of malpractice. "I think that the clips were closed and had a material defect for some reason," the surgeon said in court.
