A German shepherd broke out of a kennel in Wünnewil FR and bit two girls to the point of hospitalization. Following the incident on Sunday, the twelve-year-old dog was euthanized on Monday by order of the Office for Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs in consultation with the owner, according to the Fribourg cantonal police.
One girl suffered injuries to an arm, the second child to a hand, chest and nose. Paramedics took the children to hospital by ambulance. According to the police, they were out of danger.
The attack happened when the two children, two other girls and an adult visited a neighbor's chicken coop on Sunday afternoon. The dog broke out of its poorly locked kennel in the immediate vicinity of the coop and attacked the children. The dog's owner, a 62-year-old man, quickly intervened, according to the police. He was able to bring the animal under control.
It was initially unclear why the incident occurred. According to the police, the girls had previously visited the chicken coop several times with the owner's permission.
