Following the discovery of drinking water contamination in nine Geneva municipalities, there was a run on bottled mineral water in open stores on Sunday. Meanwhile, the authorities issued further advice on how to behave. Water that has not been boiled should not be drunk.

Geneva's public utility company SIG has asked residents in the municipalities' supply areas not to use water at all if it does not look normal or is discolored. Water that runs clear from the tap can be used for showers and toilets, but not for drinking.

Drinking water for humans and animals should only be boiled. Boiled water should also be used for washing dishes or cleaning food.

There was a rush on the stores that were open on Sunday, as a correspondent from the Keystone-SDA news agency observed. People in the affected communities stocked up on bottled mineral water.

The reason for the drinking water contamination is a burst water pipe in an important supply line. Dirt got into the pipe through the break. Drinking water analyses will be carried out later to determine the type and degree of contamination.
