The prices for data roaming abroad vary greatly depending on the provider. According to an analysis by the comparison platform Dschungelkompass and the Swiss Consumer Protection Foundation, Swiss holidaymakers travel cheapest with travel e-sim cards.
If you need 1 GB of data in other European countries, you pay significantly less with travel SIM providers than with Swiss telecom providers. According to the study, the cheapest offer comes from "Better Roaming" and costs around 4 US dollars. However, the package is only valid for 7 days.
The roaming prices of the Swiss telecom providers are significantly more expensive: Swisscom customers pay CHF 14.90 for 1 GB, almost four times more than the cheapest e-sim offer. At Salt, 1.5 GB costs as much as CHF 24.95 and at Sunrise, customers have to shell out CHF 9.90 for 500 MB or CHF 19.90 for 2 GB.
However, these huge differences must be put into perspective. For example, the data packages of Swiss telecom providers are valid for one year and unused amounts can therefore still be used for a later stay abroad. In addition, the price differences are significantly lower for higher data volumes, according to the study.
