This year, eleven out of twelve wolf packs in Graubünden have reproduced. The Wildhut has been able to confirm 46 puppies. With the exception of the Oberengadin, wolf packs now live in all of Graubünden's valleys.
There is evidence of individual wolves in all valleys of the canton with previously low wolf presence. This was stated by the cantonal Office for Hunting and Fisheries in the third quarterly report on large predators, which was published on Monday.
It is expected that more pairings will occur during the winter months due to the high dynamics. The exact number of wolves living in the canton is still unknown. A cantonal estimate of the population has not yet been completed. In mid-September, the Wildhut estimated the number of wolves to be over 100.
Wildhut shot three wolves.
A alpha female wolf was shot due to her poor physical condition and lack of flight response. Additionally, two young wolves were shot during the regulation of a pack.
The Canton of Graubünden has submitted applications to the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment for the regulation of six wolf packs in the Surselva, Misox, Hinterrhein Valley and Lenzerheide regions. Four of the applications have been approved, one has been rejected and one is still pending.
In the third quarter, large predators killed 226 livestock animals. With the exception of two calves or cows, the victims were mainly sheep and goats.
