Several hundred employees of Stahl Gerlafingen gathered on the Bundesplatz in Bern on Monday. They were protesting against their employer's redundancy plans.

The protesters demanded that the steelworks remain in operation and that no further redundancies be made. "Save these jobs," appealed Pierre-Yves Maillard, President of the Swiss Federation of Trade Unions and SP member of the Council of States, to the Federal Council. The week before last, it was announced that Stahl Gerlafingen intends to make 120 employees redundant.

The future of the steelworks has been uncertain for some time. It was only in spring that Stahl Gerlafingen decided to close a production line, resulting in the loss of around 60 jobs.

According to the trade union Syna, Stahl Gerlafingen is the largest recycling company in Switzerland. The company is a subsidiary of the Italian Beltrame Group.
