Employment situation remains positive in the second quarter

The employment situation in Switzerland remains good. There are fewer vacancies than a year ago in both industry and the service sector. The indicator for the future outlook has fallen slightly, but remains in positive territory.
A total of 5.499 million people were employed in the second quarter of 2024. This is 1.3% more than in the same period of the previous year, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Monday.
Stronger growth in the service sector
In the secondary sector (industry and construction), the number of employees rose by 0.7% to 1.134 million, in the tertiary sector (services) by 1.4% to 4.365 million. In full-time equivalents, the employment volume amounted to 4.301 million jobs (+1.4%).
However, seasonally adjusted and compared to the previous quarter, the number of employees in companies rose only slightly by 0.1% to 5.507 million. Employment in the secondary sector increased by 0.3%, while it fell by 0.1% in the tertiary sector.
Outlook remains positive despite decline
Meanwhile, the outlook is somewhat less optimistic: the employment outlook indicator has fallen by 1.5 percentage points compared to the previous year. However, at 1.05 points, it remains in positive territory, according to the FSO.
