Erwin Sperisen Has Left the Witzwil BE Correctional Facility

Erwin Sperisen, the former Guatemalan police chief, was released from the Witzwil BE prison on Friday afternoon. The Swiss Federal Court had previously overturned his 15-year prison sentence. Sperisen had been convicted of ordering extrajudicial killings and torture during his time as police chief in Guatemala. The Federal Court ruled that the evidence presented against him was insufficient to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Sperisen was released from prison after serving eight years of his sentence. He is now free to return to Guatemala.
