UV radiation is too high in one in three sunbeds in Switzerland. In self-service sunbeds, for which stricter regulations apply, the limit values were not even adhered to in over half of the cases according to a measurement campaign.

The measurements published on Monday in a bulletin from the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) were carried out in 2022 and 2023 by 17 cantonal enforcement authorities. 31 percent of the 390 or so sunbeds measured exceeded the total irradiance value of 0.3 watts per square meter at at least one measuring point, for example on the back, stomach or face.

Self-service sunbeds, such as those found in fitness centers or hotels, must comply with a limit value of 0.15 watts per square meter for UV-A and UV-B radiation. This was exceeded in 59 percent of cases.

The limits have been in place since 2019, as strong ultraviolet radiation (UV radiation) can cause cancer and other health problems, as the FOPH wrote. The measurements are to be repeated in 2025 and 2026.
