The Swiss People's Party (SP) is currently in the process of selecting a successor to outgoing Federal Councillor Alain Berset. Two potential candidates, Fabian Molina and Tamara Funiciello, have both announced their withdrawal from the race. Funiciello believes that her current role in the National Council is more important than ever, given the current political climate. She also expressed her satisfaction that Evi Allemann, a competent and experienced woman, is running for the position. Funiciello also called for a two-person list for the nomination, as it would be a political decision that would give a clear direction for SP representation in the Federal Council.
Currently, six candidates are in the running for the position: Beat Jans, Jon Pult, Matthias Aebischer, Daniel Jositsch, Roger Nordmann, and Evi Allemann. The SP co-leaders, Cédric Wermuth and Mattea Meyer, have yet to announce their ambitions. Candidates have until Sunday, October 29th to submit their candidacy to the SP. After that, internal hearings will take place, followed by a public roadshow in various parts of the country. On November 23rd, the SP will hold an extraordinary party council meeting to decide on the Federal Council ticket, and two days later the SP faction will decide on the Federal Council ticket.
It is unclear whether other parties will challenge the SP's second seat in the Federal Council. However, due to the election setback of the Greens and the GLP, a candidacy from these circles is unlikely to be successful. Generally, it can be expected that due to the French-speaking Swiss Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider, German-speaking politicians are in the pole position.
