Alain Berset has received congratulations from many quarters as the newly elected Secretary General of the Council of Europe. In addition to his former Federal Councillor colleague Ignazio Cassis, the State Councillor of Fribourg and the SP, Berset's party, a number of other congratulations from Swiss politicians were received by the newly elected Fribourg citizen on Tuesday evening.

With Alain Berset, "one of the figureheads of Swiss politics will lead one of the most important institutions of European unification", wrote the SP Switzerland in a press release. It is both an honor and an obligation for Switzerland that Berset, as former President of the Swiss Confederation, will be able to hold this office.

The Swiss Green Party also congratulated Berset on his election. They wrote on the online portal X: "Democracy and human rights are under pressure from authoritarian and right-wing populist movements throughout Europe." Also congratulating Berset were Elisabeth Schneider-Schneiter, member of the National Council, and her Green-Liberal colleague Céline Weber.

And Cassis' Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) stated that the Council of Europe, of which Switzerland has been a member since 1963, is the most important organization for the protection of human rights and the promotion of democracy and the rule of law in Europe. Since its foundation in 1949, the Council of Europe has created a common legal area in its 46 member states, which is based on the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).
