The Federal Council wants to counteract the negative effect of border protection on biodiversity. To this end, it is examining measures in the area of biodiversity advice and improving the sustainability of farms through digitalization.
On Wednesday, the Federal Council took note of the results of an evaluation of a total of seven subsidy instruments and their impact on biodiversity, as it announced. The agricultural policy instrument in the area of border protection has the greatest impact on biodiversity.
Border protection ensures higher prices for Swiss agricultural products due to import duties, which are consequently also produced in larger quantities. As a result, the land would be farmed more intensively, which would have a negative impact on biodiversity. In return, the tariffs would reduce the amount of land required abroad and thus reduce the pressure on biodiversity there, the report continued.
According to the Federal Council, the measures to be examined are intended to further improve the quality of biodiversity in Switzerland. The review is to be carried out with a view to the agricultural policy from 2030 (AP30+).
The six other instruments examined would have a lesser or no quantifiable effect. For these, the Federal Council decided to either implement various packages of measures, specify measures or review incentive systems, according to the statement.
