The Council of States has tasked the Federal Council with reporting on the direct and indirect impact of new international environmental, social and governance (ESG) guidelines on Swiss SMEs. The small chamber accepted the postulate submitted by Councillor of States Josef Dittli (FDP/UR) on Monday.
According to Dittli's postulate, the report should identify the particular challenges faced by Swiss SMEs in particular if they wish to introduce ESG standards and what options are available at federal level to support their introduction. The report should also show how other countries with similar legal systems deal with international ESG guidelines.
According to the postulate, many Swiss SMEs are exposed to international competition in which ESG criteria are becoming increasingly important. Investors, consumers and regulations, particularly at European level, are increasingly demanding sustainable business practices from Swiss companies. Many Swiss companies would have to meet this demand in order to remain competitive.
Although the consideration of ESG standards represents a challenge for Swiss SMEs, it also offers opportunities for innovation and differentiation. It is therefore important to create appropriate framework conditions for these companies so that they can adapt to this new environment as easily as possible and continue to achieve economic success. Appropriate accompanying measures could facilitate the integration of ESG standards for SMEs.
The Federal Council also supports the adoption of the postulate.
