The Federal Council wants to promote research into energy and climate issues with an additional CHF 106.8 million. On Wednesday, it adopted the dispatch on a corresponding credit commitment. The Federal Assembly will now decide.
The aim is to find quick and targeted answers to new, urgent questions to ensure security of supply and the conversion of the energy system to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, the Federal Council wrote in its press release.
The funds are to be offset by the messages on the promotion of education, research and innovation until 2036. According to the Federal Council, the implementation is therefore budget-neutral.
Specifically, the national government is planning to expand an existing research funding instrument. So far, CHF 136.4 million has been made available for the funding program called Sweet (Swiss energy research for the energy transition) for the period from 2021 to 2032.
The additional 106.8 million Swiss francs are to be used between 2025 and 2036. Sweet will thus be expanded into Sweeter (Swiss research for the energy transition and emissions reduction). The Sweeter funding will go to consortia made up of universities, companies, cities, cantons and municipalities. These participate with their own funds.
Originally, the Federal Council had submitted a credit of 135 million francs for consultation. According to the Federal Council, the proposal was welcomed by the majority.
