The celebrations for the new Federal Councillor Beat Jans (SP) in Basel began on Thursday afternoon. A special train took Jans and numerous guests to his home canton shortly before 3.00 pm.
Alphorn players welcomed the 59-year-old at the station. Jans took a dip in the crowd and was delighted with the many congratulations.
The celebrations for Basel's first Federal Councillor in 50 years last until the early hours of the morning. The canton has even allowed a free night in honor of Jans. Bars and restaurants are therefore allowed to stay open without restriction on Friday night.
Around 550 drummers and pipers, guild bannermen and other musicians will accompany Jans (SP) on his ceremonial procession through Basel. The procession will lead from the SBB railroad station to the market square and then on to Claraplatz. The festival costs around 300,000 francs.
Jans was elected to the national government on December 13. He takes over the Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP).
