The Federal Supreme Court will decide whether the 2022 vote on raising the retirement age for women from 64 to 65 must be repeated. The Greens have taken their appeal to the highest court following a decision by the canton of Geneva not to intervene.

The SP Women Switzerland and the Greens Switzerland filed complaints against the AHV 21 vote after the calculation error in the AHV financial forecasts became public. They argue that women were deprived of a year's pension in the extremely close vote using false arguments. The increase in the retirement age for women was approved by just 50.5 percent in September 2022.

The Greens submitted their complaints in the cantons of Zurich and Geneva. The canton of Geneva has already made its decision not to intervene and referred to the competence of the Federal Supreme Court, as it concerns a federal vote, as the Greens announced on Tuesday. The appeal will therefore be taken to the Federal Supreme Court.

"We expect a quick decision from the court in order to provide clarity for all women," said Lisa Mazzone, President of the Green Party, in the press release. Clarity must be achieved before the increased retirement age for women comes into force on January 1, 2025.

Two weeks ago, the Federal Social Insurance Office (FSIO) revised the financial outlook for the AHV downwards. AHV expenditure in 2033 is likely to be around four billion francs or around six percent lower than previously calculated. This means that the AHV's financial situation is better than assumed.
