In the eastern German state of Thuringia, the right-wing populist AfD has emerged as the strongest party in a state election for the first time in Germany, according to the official final result.
The Alternative for Germany (AfD) with its controversial Thuringian leader Björn Höcke achieved 32.8 percent, according to the official final result, which was presented by the state election committee in Erfurt just under two weeks after the election. Overall, there were no fundamental deviations from the result published on the evening of the election, according to the state electoral officer Holger Poppenhäger.
The AfD finished well ahead of the Christian Democratic CDU, which received 23.6% and believes it has the task of forming a government. Third place went to the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), which was only founded this year and achieved 15.8%. The Left Party (13.1 percent), led by incumbent Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow, came fourth.
The Social Democrats (SPD) made it into the state parliament with 6.1%. The Greens with 3.2 percent and the FDP with 1.1 percent did not return to the state parliament. At 73.6%, voter turnout was significantly higher than in other elections in the past.
The AfD also performed very well in the state elections held at the same time in Saxony. It came second there after the CDU (31.9%) with 30.6%.
