Fines up to 1000 Swiss Francs for Violations of the Veiling Ban

The Swiss Parliament has approved a new law to implement the so-called Burka Initiative, which was narrowly approved by the public in March 2021. The law prohibits the covering of the face in public places, with exceptions for religious places, carnival, health protection, and demonstrations for the exercise of freedom of opinion and assembly. Violations of the law will be punishable by fines of up to 1000 Swiss francs. The law will supersede any existing cantonal laws on the matter. The National Council approved the law with 151 votes in favour, 29 against, and 6 abstentions. The law is now ready for final approval.
