On Wednesday morning, a fire broke out at the Swiss Krono AG wood processing plant in Menznau, Switzerland. By the afternoon, the fire was under control, but the firefighting efforts were expected to continue into the night. According to Luzerner Fire Inspector Vinzenz Garf, the fire started at 4:30 am in a 10,000 to 12,000 square meter hall. The fire quickly developed into a large fire. Firefighters were able to control the fire in the part of the hall where wood was being processed by the morning. However, the fire continued to burn in the part of the hall where wood chips were stored. To extinguish the fire, the piles of wood chips had to be broken up with a digger. The steel structure of the hall was dismantled to ensure the safety of the firefighters. The firefighting effort was expected to last for hours and into the night, so lighting and food were organized. Around 240 firefighters from Menznau, Willisau and Wolhusen were deployed. In the afternoon, some of them were temporarily released for rest so they could be deployed again in the evening. A lot of water was needed to put out the fire, and the water supply of Menznau was pushed to its limits. Fortunately, no one was injured in the fire. The cause of the fire is still unknown. The Swiss Krono produces wood products and employs 5000 people at 10 production sites worldwide, with 480 people working at the Menznau site. The company did not make any statements about the impact of the fire on production by late afternoon.nnnnnn
