First train travels through repaired Gotthard west tunnel

The first trains passed through the west tunnel of the Gotthard Base Tunnel on Monday during the trial run. The tunnel is scheduled to be fully operational again on September 2.
The commercial train departed Chiasso at 5.30 a.m. bound for Basel, as SBB announced on Monday. Another train will then travel from Ludwigshafen (D) to Gallarate (I).
The repair work on the west tunnel took around a year. On August 10, 2023, a freight train derailed in the west tunnel on the journey from Chiasso to Basel. The cause was a broken wheel disk.
