Proponents have reacted with disappointment to the rejection of the premium relief initiative. According to them, this does nothing to change the suffering caused by health insurance premiums. The opponents explained that although the premiums were painful in some cases for the middle classes, they were still bearable.

SP National Councillor and Co-President of the parliamentary group Samira Marti (BL) said in the SRF Swiss Television voting program that health insurance premiums had doubled in the last 20 years. The opponents had created a mood with the Yes to the 13th AHV pension and threatened to increase VAT.

However, she failed to mention that a referendum is mandatory before this tax is increased. The issue of high health insurance premiums is at the top of the concern barometer and will remain there. The question arises as to whether the purchasing power of the population is at all important for politics.

SVP member of the Council of States and health politician Hannes Germann (SH) expressed his relief that the system would not be flooded with billions that would be collected via taxes and would, so to speak, move from the right to the left pocket. Healthcare costs are manageable for the middle classes and the quality of care is high.

Cost growth is being driven by ageing and, not least, immigration. Savings approaches must be found. However, the counter-proposal currently being drafted would improve the premium reduction system.
