A large forest fire broke out in the canton of Ticino on Friday evening. A large forest area in the Malcantone region west of Lugano was affected, as a police spokesperson confirmed to the Keystone-SDA news agency.

Several media outlets in Ticino had previously reported on the fire.

According to the police spokesperson, the fire was not yet completely under control at 10.00 pm. "An on-call service will remain on duty throughout the night to monitor the situation," said the spokesperson. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. However, dry conditions and wind would encourage the flames.

As the fire had not spread close to any houses, it did not pose an immediate danger to the population, the spokesman continued.

Forest fires are not uncommon in Ticino when drought conditions persist. It has often been dry in recent winters.
