Swiss film will not be forgotten at the Césars. Four Swiss co-productions have been nominated for the French film award, which takes place on Friday at the Olympia concert hall in Paris.

The film "La voie royale" was produced by RTS television in French-speaking Switzerland, among others. It portrays a young woman from the provinces in a preparatory science class in Lyon, France, which provides access to major universities such as the École Polytechnique. Suzanne Jouannet, Best Newcomer Actress at the 2022 Césars, plays the heroine, who comes from the countryside and is gifted in mathematics.

"La voie royale" (RTS, Bande à part Films) has also been nominated in several categories for the Swiss Film Award 2024, which will be presented in Zurich on March 22.

Meanwhile, in "Le théorème de Marguerite" (RTS, Beauvoir Films), Zurich native and Parisian Ella Rumpf plays the role of Marguerite, a student who fails at her dissertation presentation. In defiance, she quits everything and becomes a shoe saleswoman before discovering her talent for mahjong. Rumpf was also nominated for the Swiss Film Award in the "Best Female Actress" section.

Meanwhile, Belgian actor Julien Frison was considered in the "Révélation masculine" category, also in "Le théorème de Marguerite".

A short film and an animated film

A short film and an animated film with Swiss participation also caught the eye of the jury of the French Film Awards: "Les silencieux" by French-Swiss author and director Basile Vuillemin has been nominated for a César in the Best Fictional Short Film category.

In this short film, Jorick is one of five crew members of a small fishing trawler. After four days of unsuccessful fishing, he is faced with the dilemma of going home with an empty hold or poaching in a forbidden area against the wishes of some of the crew.

"Forbidden for Dogs and Italians" (Nadasdy) by Alain Ughetto, which has already won several prizes such as the Annecy Award and the European Cinema Award 2022, is nominated in the Best Animated Film category. The Italian-Swiss artist Elie Chapuis, who lives in Lausanne, was involved in the creation of the work as a stop-motion puppet animator.
