The Fribourg electorate does not want to enshrine the locations and opening hours of its hospital emergency rooms in the cantonal constitution. They rejected an initiative to this effect, but approved the counter-proposal. This is a watered-down version of the initiative.
The counter-proposal included seven measures to provide adequate care for all emergencies throughout the canton and to involve the partners in the healthcare system. This counter-proposal is now being implemented.
The hospital emergency room initiative launched by a citizens' committee called for public emergency rooms to be open around the clock in the south, in the center and in the German-speaking part of the canton. The cantonal parliament and government also rejected the initiative. They did not consider it to be effective.
Cantonal hospital receives guarantee and loan
The initiative for 175 million in financial aid for the cantonal hospital was clearly approved. The support includes a guarantee of 105 million for investments from 2024 to 2026 as well as an interest-free loan of 70 million for the planning of the hospital's future main site, which is located near the current Villars-sur-Glâne site.
This bill did not cause any major waves. The decree had already been approved by a very large majority in the Grand Council.
