Geneva Airport wants to launch a quota system against noise emissions next year. Anyone taking off after 10 p.m. will have to pay a fee. The test of the system, which has been running since 2023, has led to fewer delays, as airport boss André Schneider said.
For European flights, the fee is between 5,000 and 20,000 francs, for intercontinental flights between 10,000 and 40,000 francs. This was stated by the Director General of Geneva Airport in an interview with CH Media published online on Wednesday.
Geneva Airport has been testing the system without charges since last year. The number of delayed departures has fallen sharply since then. "After the official launch in 2025, practically no charges will therefore be due," said Schneider. The airlines have adjusted their flight schedules accordingly. Aircraft noise has decreased, said Schneider. "Sometimes it takes the threat of the stick instead of the carrot," said the airport director.
Limited aircraft noise
The quota system is made possible by an amendment to the operating regulations. The Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC) approved the new regulations in November 2022. Among other things, it sets a permissible noise limit and introduces a quota system for delayed flights after 10 p.m.
The new value limits the maximum permissible aircraft noise, as announced by the Federal Office of Civil Aviation in 2022. The airport is obliged to check compliance with the noise curves on an annual basis.
One of the objections raised by an opposition committee was that the population in the region would be exposed to excessive noise pollution as a result of the new regulations. The committee lodged an appeal with the Federal Administrative Court at the beginning of 2023.
