The canton of Graubünden had shot a total of 20 wolves by January 31 of this year. Graubünden has thus carried out two thirds of the authorized killings, as cantonal councillor Carmelia Maissen (center) explained to the media on Monday.

The canton originally wanted to shoot 44 of the at least 90 wolves living in Graubünden during the proactive regulation period from December 1 to January 31. 8 out of 20 animals had already been shot by gamekeepers before December 1. The time window for proactive regulation ended last Wednesday.

The plan was to completely wipe out four of the twelve wolf packs in Graubünden. But nothing came of it. On December 8, the canton had to partially halt the large-scale wolf hunt.

Several environmental organizations had successfully lodged an appeal with the Federal Administrative Court against the cull plans in Graubünden and Valais on the grounds of "disregard for proportionality". As is usually the case, this had a suspensive effect. 13 authorized culls were blocked.
