Following Wednesday's Federal Council election, the Greens see themselves as "free from false considerations" towards the SP. "We no longer owe the SP anything", said party president Balthasar Glättli. "From now on, we have to look after ourselves."

The SP declared ten minutes before the start of the election that it did not support the Green attack on Ignazio Cassis' FDP seat, Glättli said in an interview in Thursday's edition of the Tamedia newspapers. "For four years, she said that the block of four in the Federal Council, consisting of the SVP and FDP, had to be broken up. For four years, the SP assured us Greens of its solidarity. Now, in these Federal Council elections, the SP could have followed up these words with action."

The Greens draw their conclusions from the behavior of the SP - their "natural ally" until then: "The SP has created a pleasant clarity today," says Glättli. "We can - with complete serenity - consider whether we would also accept a seat on the Federal Council at the expense of the SP at the next opportunity." After all, like the FDP, the Social Democrats are mathematically overrepresented in the Federal Council. "That's why a Green seat at the expense of the SP would be more justified than the status quo."

With its "Nibelung loyalty" to the SVP and FDP, the SP had done itself a disservice: Although the Social Democrats did not support the Green attack on the FDP, the bourgeoisie had nevertheless given 70 votes to the wild candidate Daniel Jositsch, said Glättli. "In order to secure its seat, the SP sold its soul to the power cartel of the Federal Council parties.
