The three Green members of the Council of States Maya Graf (BL), Céline Vara (NE) and Mathias Zopfi (GL) and the new Zurich member of the Council of States Tiana Angelina Moser (GLP) have agreed to work together. In a joint statement on Saturday, they speak of a joint group.
Cooperation in such a group makes it possible to take the interests of the cantons and the two parliamentary groups adequately into account in the important work of the committees, the press release continues.
According to Maya Graf, the formation of this group will not mean that Green and Green-Liberal members of the Council of States will be able to join the Council of States. Graf said this on Saturday when asked. This would require a group size of five members. Because the Greens are no longer represented in the Council of States, the loss of the presidency of the Council of States for the Greens will not change.
Lisa Mazzone, a Green member of the Geneva Council of States who was not re-elected on 22 October, would have been the candidate to fill this office from December 2024. In the elections in mid-October, the Greens only won three seats in the Council of States. They still hold five until the end of the legislature.
The Greens' loss of seats has no direct impact on the distribution of committee seats. Anyone who belongs to a parliamentary group - a total of five members in the National Council and Council of States - is entitled to a committee seat.
This means that in addition to the Green members in the small chamber, the newly elected Tiana Angelina Moser (GLP/ZH) will also be able to sit on committees. In the new parliament, both the Greens and the GLP will achieve cross-council parliamentary group strength.
