From the reopening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel in September, SBB will introduce a full half-hourly service on the Gotthard axis. This was originally planned for December 2023, but had to be postponed due to the accident in the tunnel.
In addition, the direct trains to Bologna and Genoa, as well as the EC Basel-Lucerne-Milano and the tri-national Frankfurt-Zurich-Milano train will be running again from September when the Gotthard Base Tunnel reopens, as SBB announced on Tuesday. According to current planning, the Gotthard Base Tunnel should be back in normal operation from September.
There are also changes on the Simplon line: the direct Zurich-Brig train introduced in the 2024 timetable now runs all year round (without a seasonal break) and as far as Domodossola. SBB is thus offering an additional fast direct connection to Domodossola from Zurich via Lenzburg, Thun and Frutigen on Saturdays.
Fewer trains between Brig and Milan
But 2025 will also bring new construction sites. In Italy, work on the expansion of the four-metre corridor between Domodossola and Milan will continue for several years. As a result, services on the Simplon axis will have to be reduced for several years, according to SBB.
In 2025, one train less per direction could run between Basel-Bern-Milano and Geneva-Brig-Milano from Monday to Friday. However, six trains per direction and day will continue to run on weekdays, and the service will remain unchanged at eight trains at weekends, according to the press release.
There will also be construction sites on the Gotthard line next year that will lead to timetable changes. For example, the arrival and departure times of the IC2/21 in Lugano will change in summer 2025.
