Health insurance companies do not have to pay for advice on living wills

Health insurance companies should not have to pay for medical consultations in connection with a living will. The Council of States has rejected an initiative by National Councillor Marcel Dobler (FDP/SG).
The parliamentary initiative is therefore off the table. The small chamber rejected it without opposition on Tuesday, following the majority of its Social and Health Committee (SGK-S). The National Council had supported the initiative.
The health insurance companies could already cover these costs if the consultation was in connection with a specific illness, the commission stated. In other situations, the decision is the responsibility of each individual. If the insurance companies always had to pay, this would increase costs and premiums.
The federal government itself recommends medical advice on advance directives, Dobler explained his concern. It is therefore inconsistent if this advice is not included in the range of health insurance benefits.
