- One year ago (2023) ... Theodore J. Kaczynski, the so-called "Unabomber", died in a prison in North Carolina at the age of 81. He had terrorized the USA from 1978 to 1995 with his attacks using homemade bombs. The highly intelligent mathematician attacked academics, business people and others, killing three people and injuring 23. His declared aim was the collapse of the modern social order.

- 20 years ago (2004) ... the US musician Ray Charles died of liver cancer in Beverly Hills at the age of 73. The singer, songwriter and pianist was also known as the "High Priest of Soul". He shaped the development of rhythm and blues, blues, country and soul. He sold a total of around 90 million records.

- 25 years ago (1999) ... NATO stopped air strikes on targets in Yugoslavia.

... Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky gave a speech to the Swiss Federal Assembly. In the video broadcast, he accused Russia of war crimes following the war of aggression it launched against Ukraine the previous year. Zelensky suggested that Switzerland hold a global peace summit. The SVP, the country's largest party, boycotted the speech for reasons of neutrality.

Furgler is considered the "father of the canton of Jura". The "Lex Furgler" restricted the sale of real estate to foreigners. Furgler died on July 23, 2008.

- One year ago (2023) ... it was announced that Northern Bald Ibis chicks had hatched in Switzerland for the first time in 400 years. There were two animals in Rümlang ZH. The nest was located on a windowsill of a Harley-Davidson branch.

- 5 years ago (2019) ... the US actor Max Wright, best known as Willie Tanner in "Alf", died. (*2.8.1943)

- 30 years ago (1994) ... the German actor Leonard Carow ("War Horse") was born.

- 50 years ago (1974) ... the barcode was introduced for the first time in the US state of Ohio. In a branch of the Marsh supermarket chain, the first product marked with a barcode, a ten-pack of Juicy Fruit (chewing gum) from the manufacturer Wrigley, was recorded and sold by a scanner checkout.

- 60 years ago (1964) ... postal codes were introduced in Switzerland. Switzerland was the third country after Germany (1941) and the USA (1963) to introduce a postal code system.

- 65 years ago (1959) ... the German actor and director Leander Haussmann was born.

- 70 years ago (1954) ... the German actor and musician Miroslav Nemec (Detective Inspector Ivo Batic in Munich's "Tatort") was born in Zagreb/Croatia.

- One year ago (2023) ... the Munich Regional Court convicted ex-Audi boss Rupert Stadler of fraud in the diesel engine manipulation scandal. He received a suspended prison sentence of one year and nine months. Stadler had confessed to stopping the sale of manipulated cars too late. The diesel scandal uncovered in 2015 shook the entire industry and caused billions in damage.

- 10 years ago (2014) ... the US soul musician Bobby Womack ("Fly me to the Moon", *4.3.1944) died

- 15 years ago (2009) ... the US actress and singer Gale Storm died. She has four stars on the Walk of Fame, one each for her achievements in radio, music, television and film. Gale Storm was a casting show winner: at 17, she won a one-year contract with a film studio in the "Gateway to Hollywood Contest".

- 25 years ago (1999) ... the US actor Chandler Riggs, known from the TV series "The Walking Dead", was born.

- 80 years ago (1944) ... the Swiss composer Werner Wehrli died. (*8.1.1892).

- 5 years ago (2019) ... the German actress Lisa Martinek, who appeared in many TV productions, died. She suffered a cardiac arrest at the age of 47 while diving on Elba. (*11.2.1972)

- 25 years ago (1999) ... the Austrian actress Hilde Krahl died. (*10.1.1917)

- 130 years ago (1894) ... a federal decree provided for the establishment of a Swiss National Library in Bern.

... The Argentinian humorist cartoonist Guillermo Mordillo, whose trademarks were bulbous-nosed men and giraffes with overlong necks, died. (*4.8.1932).

- 5 years ago (2019) ... the South Korean actress Jeon Mi-seon died at the age of 48 in a hotel room in South Korea, presumably by suicide. (*7.12.1970)

- 10 years ago (2014) ... Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi proclaimed the "caliphate" in the an-Nuri mosque in Mosul and named his fighting organization "Islamic State" (IS). He proclaimed himself the "leader of all believers" and now called himself "Emir al-Mu'minin". IS temporarily controlled territories in Syria and Iraq.

- 15 years ago (2009) ... the former American stockbroker Bernard Madoff was sentenced to 150 years in prison in New York for the biggest investment fraud in criminal history.

- 25 years ago (1999) ... Abdullah Öcalan was sentenced to death in Turkey.

- 30 years ago (1994) ... the Austrian serial killer Jack Unterweger hanged himself in his cell after being sentenced to life imprisonment. Unterweger used the same complicated knot for himself that he used to strangle his victims. He had already been sentenced to life imprisonment for murder in 1973. While in prison, he began to write and became a favorite of the literary scene. Prominent intellectuals stood up for him and he was released in 1990. He then went on a reading spree, killing eleven prostitutes in Austria, Prague and Los Angeles. For a long time, nobody noticed that he was performing in the city in question on the day of the crime.

- 60 years ago (1964) ... the Danish pop singer Gitte Haenning ("Ich will 'nen Cowboy als Mann") was born. In the 1950s, she was Scandinavia's best-known child star, and in the 1960s she also became a star in Germany, initially as part of a duo with Rex Gildo. In the 1980s she began to perform more serious music, mainly from musicals, and from the 1990s also jazz.

- 95 years ago (1929) ... the Italian author and resistance fighter Oriana Fallaci was born. ("Letter to a child never born", †15.9.2006)

- One year ago (2023) ... Brazil's highest court barred former President Jair Bolsonaro from all public office until 2030. According to the electoral court, the right-wing populist had abused his power as president and stirred up doubts about the electoral system.

- 15 years ago (2009) ... the German dancer and choreographer Pina Bausch (*27.6.1949) died

... Yemenia Flight 626 on its way from Sanaa in Yemen to Moroni (Comoros) crashed into the Indian Ocean on its approach to the main island of Grande Comore. There were 153 people on board, one girl was rescued after drifting on a piece of wreckage in the sea for eight hours.

- 30 years ago (1994) ... Diego Maradona was banned from the World Cup in the USA for violating doping regulations.

- 50 years ago (1974) ... the Swiss ski racer Roger Staub died. He was Olympic champion in the giant slalom in Squaw Valley in 1960. He was also a nine-time Swiss champion. He died when his delta glider crashed from a height of 150 meters during a test flight in Verbier VS.

- 75 years ago (1949) ... the British musician Andy Scott from The Sweet was born.

- 130 years ago (1894) ... Tower Bridge was officially opened.
