Mirjana Spoljaric, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), complained on Saturday that the war in Gaza was destroying "any sense of common humanity". The ICRC is once again calling for a cessation of hostilities, the release of hostages and access to Palestinian prisoners.

After five months of war between Israel and Hamas, the situation in the Gaza Strip is deteriorating by the hour. There is no safe place for people to flee to. "The high number of civilian casualties and the continued holding of hostages are shocking and unacceptable," criticized the ICRC President in her statement on Saturday.

In view of this "profound suffering", the ICRC made three urgent appeals to the public: the Geneva-based organization called for a "cessation of hostilities" to facilitate the work of humanitarian aid workers.

The ICRC reiterated its demand to be allowed to visit the hostages captured during Hamas' unprecedented attack on Israeli soil on October 7 and to release them "unconditionally".

Spoljari also called for Palestinian prisoners to be treated with humanity and to be allowed to communicate with their families. In addition, the ICRC must be informed about detentions and be able to visit Palestinians imprisoned by Israel.
