Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis met with the Italian Minister of Economy and Finance, Giancarlo Giorgetti, in Rome on Friday. The talks focused on the topics of taxation, innovation and the labor market.

In a statement following the meeting, the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) said that the meeting had made it possible to reaffirm the positive momentum that had developed in recent years.

This positive momentum has contributed to the conclusion of numerous agreements and a bilateral trade volume that now exceeds one billion Swiss francs per week, the report continues. In 2023, the bilateral agreement on the taxation of cross-border commuters came into force and Switzerland was removed from the Italian blacklist for the taxation of natural persons.

On Thursday, Switzerland's chief diplomat opened the 7th Dialogue Forum between Switzerland and Italy together with his Italian counterpart Antonio Tajani. According to the FDFA, the two ministers discussed bilateral relations and the status of negotiations with the European Union on the fringes of this event.

Food security as a "priority"

In the Eternal City, Mr Cassis also met the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Qu Dongyu, and the President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Alvaro Lario. During his meeting with Qu, he emphasized, according to the text of his speech, that "food security in the world is a priority for Switzerland".

"It is therefore not surprising that Switzerland included food security as one of the three priorities" of the Bürgenstock Summit (NW) on Ukraine in June, he said: "In their final declaration, 95 nations strongly condemned the attacks on merchant ships, commercial ports and civilian infrastructure and recalled that food must never become a weapon of war."
