The German pianist Igor Levit has once again created a "piano festival" for the Lucerne Festival. He himself will be performing Bach, Beethoven and Brahms. The improvising pianist Johanna Summer and the singing pianist Danger Dan expand the spectrum.

The Piano Festival 2023 was held for the first time. With this short festival, Levit wants to get out of the rut of guest performances, give himself and the guests time and build bridges between composed and improvised music, between Baroque, Classical or Romantic composers and other styles.

On the four days of the festival from 9 to 12 May, variety is the order of the day. Levit will perform a classical program each evening, once solo, once with his student Lukas Sternath and once with the Berlin Baroque Soloists.

Late at night, the 37-year-old pianist leaves the concert hall to his guests. As he did a year ago, he has invited Johanna Summer. The 29-year-old improvises like a jazz musician, but takes works of classical music as her starting point.

The second guest is Danger Dan. The 41-year-old, who is also at home in punk and hip hop, sings and plays his melodious but political program "Das ist alles von der Kunstfreiheit gedeckt" on the piano. He and Levit performed the title song together on the late-night show "ZDF Magazin Royale" in 2021.

With the exception of Danger Dan, the participants will come together for the final concert on the last evening. Igor Levit will play piano pieces by Brahms, Lukas Sternath pieces by Liszt. Members of the Berlin Baroque Soloists and improvisation artist Johanna Summer will also be on stage. "We can't tell you exactly what you can expect at this concert," says the Lucerne Festival announcement.
