In the St. Gallen Rhine Valley, the Rhine has overflowed its banks and flooded the area between the dams. The peak was reached in the afternoon, according to a spokesperson for the Rhine Regulation. The Rhine foreland between Kriessern and the Bodensee estuary remains closed. On Monday, after heavy rainfall in eastern Switzerland and Graubünden, the Rhine was carrying high water. The peak of the water masses was reached in the afternoon, according to Ralph Dietsche, media spokesperson for the international Rhine Regulation. Instead of the 2400 cubic meters of water per second predicted in the early morning, the measuring point in Diepoldsau SG measured a peak of 2000 cubic meters per second. This corresponds to an event that only occurs every few years, Dietsche said. However, it is not alarming. The capacity of the Rhine is 3100 cubic meters of water per second with the Rhine foreland between the two outer dams. Since the late afternoon, the responsible parties have been expecting a steady decrease in the water level in the Rhine Valley. Therefore, the corresponding command staff is withdrawing into standby mode, Dietsche said. Dam checks are also being discontinued. As a precaution, civil guards checked the stability of the outer dams in the afternoon. According to Dietsche, no damage was detected. The two rivers Sitter and Thur also carry high water in Thurgau. This is currently at the lowest level of danger, according to Michael Roth, spokesman for the Thurgau cantonal police, in response to a request from the news agency Keystone-SDA. Fire brigades have closed individual roads along the rivers. So far, no reports of damage have been received.nnnnnnnnnnnn
