Following the fire and the resulting destruction of a gymnasium in a school in Bière VD on Wednesday morning, investigators from the Vaud cantonal police are assuming arson. No one was injured in the fire.
The police called on witnesses to come forward on Wednesday evening.
The fire department brought the fire under control on Wednesday morning. The caretaker had alerted the emergency services at around 05:00 in the morning. According to the police, two roads had to be temporarily closed for the firefighting operation. This had no impact on traffic.
The school, which has around ten classes and teaches pupils aged four to twelve, will remain closed for the weekend. This was decided by the municipal and school authorities in consultation with the emergency services on Wednesday. During this time, the affected area will be secured and the school premises cleaned. Parents have been asked to keep their children at home if possible.
The classrooms were apparently spared from the flames. "It seems that the firewalls worked well", said the president of the municipality, Michel Dénéréaz, to the Keystone-SDA news agency.
