Beat Jans, President of the Basel cantonal government, was only elected as the party's official candidate for the Federal Council in the 10th ballot, while his ticket partner Jon Pult (NR/GR) was elected in the 8th ballot. They were defeated in the final rounds by Bernese government councillor Evi Allemann and National Councillor Roger Nordmann (VD) respectively.

This is evident from the election protocol, which was made available to the Keystone-SDA news agency. According to the protocol, Jans won 29 votes in the fight for the first place on the ticket in the 10th ballot, Allemann 20. Daniel Jositsch (SR/ZH) was eliminated first in the 3rd ballot, Matthias Aebischer (NR/BE) in the 7th ballot, Pult in the 8th and Nordmann in the 9th.

In the election for the second place on the ticket, Jositsch was again the first to be eliminated in the 5th ballot, followed by Aebischer in the 6th and Allemann in the 7th ballot. In the end, Pult won the race with 27 votes against Nordmann with 22 votes.
