A second ballot is required to elect the successor to SP Federal Councillor Alain Berset. Beat Jans received the most votes in the first ballot with 89, but fell short of the absolute majority, as did candidates Daniel Jositsch (63) and Jon Pult (49).
The votes for Daniel Jositsch probably came from the conservative camp. In the run-up to the election, various SVP, FDP and centrist representatives had expressed dissatisfaction with the official SP ticket consisting of Jans and Pult. Both candidates were too left-wing.
National Councillor Gerhard Andrey received 30 votes in the first ballot, with 12 different votes. There is no restriction on the number of votes in the second ballot. Jans needs around 35 additional votes to achieve an absolute majority.
