Following the election of Viktor Rossi as Federal Chancellor, Jörg De Bernardi will take over the office of Vice-Chancellor on an interim basis from January 1, 2024. Like Rossi, he will therefore attend the weekly meetings of the Federal Council.

The Federal Council appointed De Bernardi to the post on Friday. It remains to be seen how long he will serve as Vice-Chancellor. The position was publicly advertised by the Federal Chancellery. De Bernardi is not available to fill the post definitively, as the Federal Chancellery announced.

The 50-year-old from Zurich already held the position of Vice-Chancellor from August 1, 2016 to April 30, 2019. He stepped down for family reasons. De Bernardi fulfills all the requirements for the role and is in a position to take on this task again on an interim basis, according to the statement.

Since May 1, 2019, De Bernardi has headed the Federal Chancellery's Resources division as well as the Human Resources, Finance, Controlling, Business Administration, Security, Infrastructure and Digital Services sections. His area of responsibility includes, for example, personal security checks.

The Federal Council section, which De Bernardi will head in future, includes the section that handles the 2,500 or so items of business that the Federal Council adopts each year. This section also organizes the response to around 1,300 parliamentary procedural requests each year.
