Federal Councillor Beat Jans misses the former willingness to compromise in Switzerland. "Our society is becoming increasingly polarized. Many focus on what makes us different and forget what we have in common," said the Director of Justice in an interview with "Schweizer Familie" on Thursday.

Social media would also play a key role in this development, said the SP politician from Basel. He identifies a lack of openness there.

"Many people understand less and less what others think because they only move in their circles on the internet and confirm each other," said Jans. "They forget that there are still people who have a different opinion and who need to be respected."

Jans therefore pleaded for more cooperation. "That's how our country was created. Cooperation has made Switzerland strong." However, this also requires a willingness to approach each other and compromise from time to time. This is also his message for the national holiday in a week's time. "We should spend more time in the company of others. Talk less about each other and more with each other."

For example, Jans and his family set rules for their two daughters when it came to using cell phones. "We didn't have a cell phone until they were twelve," said Jans. They also agreed to limit cell phone use. "But I admit, it takes nerve and strength."

Jans has been a member of the Federal Council since January and heads the Department of Justice and Police. The 60-year-old succeeded his party colleague Alain Berset in the government.
