Emergency services rescued a lifeless woman from one of the two lakes in the Les Îles recreation area in Sion on Tuesday afternoon. Third parties had alerted the police on Monday after finding abandoned personal belongings by the water.
Following the report at around 9 p.m., the cantonal police launched a search operation on Monday, as reported on Wednesday. This included search specialists, a boat and a drone. Shortly before 4 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, divers from the Valais and Fribourg cantonal police found the woman's body at a depth of 35 meters.
According to police, the woman, who had not been identified by Wednesday, disappeared between Sunday and Monday. According to initial investigations, she was dependent on a crutch. The public prosecutor's office has opened an investigation. Les Îles, near the Rhone, is home to a campsite, restaurants and two lakes. The site belongs to the municipality of Sion.
