On Sunday evening, the Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF) forecast the second-highest danger level for the northern Alpine ridge from Valais via the Bernese Oberland to the Glarus Alps. Otherwise, the danger level was three out of five.
Danger level four for Valais up to Glarnerland will be reached around Monday morning, the SLF wrote on its website. Above 2200 meters, there are so-called drifting snow accumulations that are "prone to disruption". This can cause spontaneous avalanches, which can carry the wet snow with them and thus become very large.
The avalanches can come down into the valley in the "typical avalanche tracks" and endanger traffic routes. Even individual winter sports enthusiasts can easily trigger avalanches, according to the report. The situation is particularly critical away from the pistes.
