Major fire destroys sawmill and residential building in Neu St. Johnann SG

A major fire destroyed a sawmill building and an adjoining residential building in Neu St. Johann SG early on Friday morning. According to the police, more than one million francs worth of damage was caused. No one was injured.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, according to the St. Gallen cantonal police. When the fire department arrived, the sawmill was fully engulfed in flames. According to the police, the residential building attached to the sawmill was also fully engulfed in flames.
The two residents, a 51-year-old woman and a 69-year-old man, had already been evacuated from the building shortly after the report was received, the police reported. They remained unharmed. The fire-fighting work was still ongoing on Friday morning.
A total of around 110 members of four fire departments, the rescue service with an ambulance and several patrols and specialists from the St.Gallen cantonal police were deployed. The Forensics Competence Center of the cantonal police had been entrusted by the public prosecutor's office with investigating the cause of the fire.
