According to a survey, almost two thirds of Swiss citizens welcome the Federal Council's decision to reduce radio and TV fees from CHF 335 to CHF 300 per household. The SVP's halving initiative, on the other hand, was rejected in the survey.

55 percent of respondents said that, based on their current level of knowledge, they would vote "no" or "rather no" to the initiative launched by the SVP, which aims to reduce radio and TV fees to CHF 200 per household per year.

Just as with the Federal Council's austerity plans, the "halving initiative" also revealed a divide in Switzerland, as the Sotomo research institute announced on Friday in response to the survey published by "Blick". The initiative was more clearly rejected in French-speaking Switzerland than in German-speaking Switzerland.

Almost four out of five respondents stated that they value SRG as a source of information. However, there were major differences in sympathy according to party: They ranged from 93% for the SP to 56% for the SVP, who feel "very well" or "fairly well" informed by SRG's offerings. Meanwhile, three quarters of all respondents considered SRG's contribution to democracy in Switzerland to be important.

Most see savings potential in culture

The survey participants saw the most potential for savings in the areas of music, entertainment, film production and culture. One in three respondents also thought that the number of radio stations at the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SRG) could be reduced. SRG currently operates a total of 17 radio stations.

Almost one in three people surveyed saw great potential for savings in SRG's social media channels, while the figure for administration was as high as 50 percent.

The survey was conducted by Sotomo on behalf of Ringier from June 20 to 26 of the current year. 24,720 voters took part.
