Maria Wegelin resigned as president of the SVP Winterthur on Tuesday. Her successor until the ordinary general assembly of the party will be Marco Graf, as the SVP announced.
Wegelin had previously resigned from office after it became known that she had collaborated with two activists of the far-right "Junge Tat" in the National Council election campaign. On Tuesday, she resigned from her post at an extraordinary general meeting of the party, according to the statement. The new interim president Marco Graf will lead the SVP Winterthur until the ordinary general assembly in 2024, according to the statement.
At the end of September, "SonntagsBlick" had made public that Maria Wegelin had engaged two previously convicted activists of the extreme right-wing "Junge Tat" for her, ultimately unsuccessful, National Council election campaign in social media. The Winterthur Homeowners' Association (HEV) then withdrew its support and called on Wegelin to distance herself from the "Junge Tat".

However, she did not. She did not want anyone to dictate who she worked with, she stressed in a video. In interviews, Wegelin said she had never heard of the "Junge Tat" group at the time the contract was awarded. She said that the two young men were sympathetic to her and that there was common ground. In this context, she mentioned the Corona pandemic and the measures taken by the federal government against it.
The "Junge Tat" is under observation by the Federal Police (Fedpol), and several proceedings are underway against members of this right-wing extremist group. The "Junge Tat" gained notoriety around 2022 when it disrupted an event at which drag queens read to children.
